Infosys Tightens Hybrid Work Model

Infosys Tightens Hybrid Work Model: Employees Required to Work 10 Days from Office

In a move aimed at bringing more employees back to the office, Infosys has mandated that its technology workforce must work from the office for at least 10 days each month, starting March 10, 2025. This directive, first reported by the Economic Times, was communicated via an email from functional heads, urging employees to limit their work-from-home (WFH) requests.

New System Intervention to Ensure Compliance

To reinforce this policy, Infosys is introducing a "system intervention" that will regulate the number of WFH days employees can apply for each month. The objective is to strike a balance between flexibility and in-person collaboration. According to the internal email, employees must adhere to the company’s hybrid work model, which requires at least 10 days of in-office presence or more, depending on business needs.

Who Does This Impact?

This mandate primarily applies to employees at Job Level 5 (JL5) and below, including software engineers, senior engineers, system engineers, and consultants. Team leaders, who are at JL5, must also comply with the new rule. However, those at JL6 and above—such as managers, senior managers, and delivery managers—are not bound by this requirement. Vice presidents remain excluded from this directive.

Tracking Office Attendance

To monitor adherence to this policy, Infosys employees use a mobile application to log their attendance. Previously, WFH requests were approved by default, but moving forward, employees will need to ensure that they log at least 10 office days each month.

A senior employee, speaking anonymously, stated that this policy is primarily a project-driven requirement rather than a company-wide unit mandate. Another employee mentioned that while the flexibility of remote work has been beneficial in saving commute time and reducing fatigue, the new rule might impact efficiency for some employees.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Employees who fail to meet the mandatory 10-day office requirement may see those unfulfilled days deducted from their leave balance. While Infosys has not explicitly linked this policy to variable pay, rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has enforced a stricter five-day in-office requirement, with non-compliance impacting employee compensation.

Infosys’ Return-to-Office Strategy

Infosys first introduced its hybrid work policy on November 20, 2023. Since then, the company has designated certain weeks each quarter as “in-person collab” weeks, during which all team members are expected to work from the office for better team synergy and collaboration.

With these new measures, Infosys aims to foster better teamwork while maintaining some level of flexibility. As the corporate world continues to navigate hybrid work models, it remains to be seen how employees will adapt to these evolving workplace policies.
